Solar on the Mornington Peninsula: What Actually Changes Your Bill

Solar can genuinely cut your power bill — but how much depends on a handful of things that are worth understanding before you commit to a system size.

System size vs. usage. A bigger system isn’t automatically better. If your household uses most of its power at night, a large daytime-generating system will export a lot of that power back to the grid at a lower rate than you pay to buy it. Matching system size to your actual usage pattern matters more than chasing the biggest panel count you can fit on the roof.

Roof direction and shading. North-facing roofs get the most consistent generation through the day. East- or west-facing panels still work, but the generation curve shifts — more power in the morning or afternoon rather than spread through the day. Even partial shading from a tree or a neighbouring roofline can meaningfully cut what a panel produces.

When you use power. Solar without a battery mostly saves you money on the power you use during daylight hours. Running the dishwasher, washing machine, or charging an EV while the sun’s out gets far more value out of a system than running everything in the evening.

Panel efficiency and degradation. Not all panels are equal, and all panels lose a small amount of output every year. It’s worth asking what warranty and degradation rate you’re actually getting, not just the sticker price per watt.

None of this means solar isn’t worth it — for most Mornington Peninsula households, it is. It just means the right system is the one sized to how your household actually uses power, not a generic package. Happy to talk through what that looks like for your place.
